Hypafix (Second Skin) Aftercare

(If not using Hypafix, refer to Step 4)

Step 1

Second skin will be placed on your fresh tattoo at the studio. In the first 24-48 hours, there may be a build-up of a brown/black liquid (plasma) under the bandage — this is completely normal. You will want to keep a very close eye on your bandage throughout the duration of wear for any leakage of plasma or lifting of the bandage that exposes your tattoo. If either of these instances occur, take the bandage off immediately and wash your tattoo (steps 3 and 4).

Step 2

We recommend leaving the second skin on for 3-5 days unless otherwise instructed. If any irritation or redness occurs you may take it off at any time, just be sure to wash it.

Step 3

When you are ready to remove your bandage, it is best to do so under running water or in a hot shower. Gently pull the bandage away from itself and stretch it (like peeling a command strip). It may help to hold the part of the bandage down that you are pulling away from as you are stretching.

Step 4

Wash your tattoo with warm water and unscented liquid antibacterial soap, rinse thoroughly and let air dry or use clean paper towel (bath towels, wash cloths, etc. may contain bacteria). Moisturize your tattoo with a very thin layer of Aquaphor (just enough to soak into the skin, it iseasy to over-moisturize with this product), unscented lotion, or an unscented tattoo balm after cleaning it each time. Once your bandage is off you will do this 3x daily until it is fully healed (about 2-4 weeks).

Things to avoid while healing:

  • It is key to avoid intense exercise or engaging in activity that would make you sweat more than usual while your tattoo is healing (2-4 weeks). Sweat can lead to infection.

  • Showering is okay, but do not submerge your bandage in water — water will break down

the adhesive and get inside, causing possible infection. Once your bandage is off you

will also want to avoid submerging your tattoo until it is fully healed.

  • Do not pick at your tattoo. It will cause your tattoo to heal incorrectly and may result in scarring.

  • Keep it out of the sun while it is healing, and apply sunscreen after it has fully healed.

  • Avoid tight/abrasive clothing on the area of the tattoo while it is healing.

  • Do not re-cover your tattoo with any bandage/saran wrap after the one given to you by

    your artist is taken off.

If at any point you experience persistent or new redness, swelling, irritation, or your tattoo feels hot, seek medical attention immediately.

If you have any questions or concerns, we encourage you to reach out to the shop or your artist for clarification. We are here for you after the tattoo is finished!

Aftercare ointment recommendations:

You may use a mild, unscented lotion, cocoa butter, unscented tattoo balm or a very thin layer of Aquaphor.
